Tips for the Mother of the Bride

Congratulations! Your daughter is engaged! You are going through so many emotions now:
  • My baby is getting married!
  • How are we going to pay for a wedding?
  • Who are we going to invite?
  • We have so much to do!

First, enjoy this moment with her. You both have been thinking about this day since she was born. Then, take a deep breath and keep these things in mind:
  • Sit down with your daughter and listen to her dreams for her wedding. This will give you an idea of what to anticipate as far as expenses.
  • Talk to your daughter about what wedding expenses you are willing to pay for. Ask her to have her fiancé’ check with his parents on if they want to pay for anything. How will your daughter and future son-in-law help with expenses?
  • Don’t let your daughter hear you or your husband say, “We can’t afford that!” You have known one day she was going to get married so hopefully, you have saved some money for this day. Keep in mind your daughter is in love, so don’t burst her bubble. There are numerous ways to make her dreams come true without it costing a lot. A wedding planner can help you with this task.
  • Let your daughter plan her wedding, but tell her you are available to help if she needs it.
  • Remember “It’s not your wedding.” Let your daughter and future son-in-law put their personality on their wedding. Traditions have changed since you got married. Smile and let them have fun.
  • It’s nice if your family and friends want to help but keep in mind, they also want to be a guest. So if you are thinking of asking them to help on the day of the wedding, know you are denying them the opportunity to see your daughter get married and enjoy the reception. Also, ask your daughter’s permission before you ask or accept any help. This is where a wedding planner is very helpful. Everyone can enjoy the wedding while the wedding planner does the work.
  • Don’t forget your husband and rest of your family during this time. Wedding planning can take over a household for several months and even a year. Set time aside to talk about something other than the wedding.
  • Enjoy the wedding week. Don’t worry about the details. Hire a wedding planner to handle everything. Enjoy this time with your daughter before she embarks on married life.
