What Do I Wear to a Wedding?
What to wear to a wedding depends on the style of wedding and the time of day.
If the wedding is formal, this means a floor-length gown for the ladies and a tuxedo for the men. Our society has loosened the restrictions somewhat and some women wear cocktail dresses and the men wear dark suits with a tie. Evening weddings are considered formal.
Semi-formal weddings can mean a suit or tuxedo for the men and a floor-length, tea-length or knee-length dress for the women.
Casual does not always mean blue jeans. There are different types of casual: business, resort and dress casual. All are conservative. The men may wear a suit, dress pants and jacket with a tie, or khaki pants with a button collar shirt and jacket – no tie. The ladies can wear a short dress, but not too short.
If the location of the wedding is unique, a good rule is to ask the bride or someone in her wedding party if she doesn’t specify a dress code or you are uncertain of what to wear. I have attended weddings where the location was in a barn in the woods. The bride requested everyone to wear denim. A beach wedding requires lightweight clothes in a casual manner. Remember you will, most likely, be walking on sand and it will be windy.
Weddings are a sacred ceremony. Your dress should be neat, clean and conservative.
