Creating Your Guest List

CREATING YOUR GUEST LIST

Creating your guest list can be a stressful task. It causes you to procrastinate but it must be one of the first tasks you take on. First, decide about the following before making your list.

  • What is your budget for the reception? Food, drink, venue rental, decorations, favors?
  • How many people will your reception venue hold?
  • Are you planning a plated dinner (sit down) or buffet/food stations?

Next, the bride, groom, bride’s parents and groom’s parents should all make lists of people they wish to invite. Compare the lists and note any duplicate names. If the list is too large, begin whittling it down.

What is a tiered guest list? This is when the people “you absolutely must invite” are placed on the A-list. The remaining guests are placed on the B-list. The invitations on the A-list are mailed 6-8 weeks prior to the wedding. If anyone declines then a guest from the B-list is sent an invitation. It is important to keep the lists secret so no one's feelings are hurt.
