Thank You Notes

Thank You Notes
Those dreaded thank you notes! Even though we procrastinate to write them, the recipient is very grateful to receive them. Don’t you feel the same way when you receive a thank you note?

Why must I write them? First, it’s a nice gesture and second, it lets the gift-giver know you received their gift. You hate to say it but people remember if you don’t acknowledge their gift just like they will remember if you sent them a thank you note.

What do I write? We have all been faced with that blank piece of paper. You don’t have to write a lot. For example: “Thank you for the towels. They will look great in our bathroom. We appreciate you thinking of us at this special time in our lives.”

Below are some Do’s and Don’ts to writing thankyou notes:

DO
  • Have your supplies ready: cards, a good writing pen and stamps. Now that you are in the mood to write, you don’t want to be lacking in supplies. Use good stationery. Monogrammed cards are nice and you might want to invest in an embossed stamp with your return address.
  • Think about what you want to write. How will you use the gift? What makes the gift special to you?
  • Act quickly. Your note will feel more genuine if you write it soon after you receive the gift. If you write your thank you notes after each shower, you won’t have as many to write when you get back from your honeymoon.

DON’T
  • Don’t use a template. Even the shortest note that gets right to the point is more effective than a generic note.
  • Don’t rely on technology to convey your message. If you really want someone to know how much you appreciate their gift, a hand-written note is the best way to accomplish the task and not an e-mail note.
  • Don’t be afraid. It’s just a few words. Have fun!

Still need help? There are several books and websites that can help. “The Art of Thank You: Crafting Notes of Gratitude” by Connie Leas or Google “Thank You Notes-Southern Living” are a couple of examples.
